About This Spot

Stepping into Tahrir Square, you immediately sense the welcoming hum of a relaxed but vibrant neighborhood spot. Nestled in the heart of Portland’s SE Hawthorne corridor, this Mediterranean haven invites you to linger in a space where the pace slows just enough to savor each moment. The aroma of warm pita and freshly grilled spices fills the air, weaving through casual chatter and the soft clink of cutlery, creating an atmosphere both familiar and intriguingly layered.

Here, the experience is as much about connection as it is about food. Whether sharing a mezza plate with friends or enjoying a quiet meal tucked into the central seating, the setting encourages a subtle communion with the day’s rhythms and flavors. The menu speaks through its thoughtfully crafted plates—the kind that carry stories of sunlit olive groves, bustling street markets, and family kitchens where recipes have been nurtured for generations.

At Tahrir Square, falafel is no ordinary bite, and the lamb shawarma carries a gentle warmth that lingers far beyond the meal. The sides chosen, whether hummus with its creamy, garlicky depth, or the fragrant rice spiced with subtle curry notes, bring their own tales to the table. Each dish feels like a quiet invitation to explore tastes both ancient and immediate, celebrating the traditions of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines with a fresh, Portland touch.

Guests often find themselves drawn to the genuine, unhurried hospitality—a reflection of the place’s roots and its commitment to a welcoming, inclusive space. Whether stopping in solo or gathering in a small group, there’s a comforting rhythm here, one that mirrors the ebb and flow of the vibrant neighborhood it calls home. It’s a place to enjoy thoughtfully prepared food and, more importantly, the simple pleasure of a shared moment.

Great chicken shawarma plate with great side options, I would highly recommend it! I also really enjoyed the central seating area amidst the food trucks. Fast service and stellar food, what more can you ask for?

Delicious mediterranean / Egyptian food. I got Lamb shawarma in a plate. It came with 2 sides. Hummus and salads were my choices. Great portion and flavorful. The rice are in curry & spice flavor.

This is byfar the best Greek food we have had. Making it a must stop for everyone. We will most definitely be returning in the future.

The falafel is some of the best I've ever had. It's made with fava beans and chickpeas, which is authentic to the region, and has great texture. Crispy on the outside, soft and not dried out on the inside. I had an Egyptian friend tell me these are the closest falafels he has tried to what he gets back home. I also loved the moussaka stew, baba ganoush, hummus, lamb shawarma plate, lentil soup, and mint tea. I've gone here a few times now and will definitely be back!
